Lian Qiao Street Statement

Lianqiao Street located in Haishu District in the southeast of Ningbo City in China typifies an ancient residential community. There are plenty of Jiangnan style residential buildings that have over a hundred years of history. The people there still preserve a traditional lifestyle. Their houses are characterised by horse head walls representative of Zhejiang architectural culture where walls are built with horse head like figures on the top, grey-green bricks and black roof tiles. When walking in this area it feels like being transported back in time, more than a century ago. Unfortunately, everything disappeared in 2007. Residents were removed, houses demolished. This is a typical epitome of the Socialist modernization and construction era in China. Everything will be lost, their soul and memory extinguished. In the summer of 2006, I took a series of portraits of the residents in this area including a youth, engineer, security guard, old woman, old man, child, artist, monk, Buddha and even a table. I wanted to demonstrate this group's spiritual status while facing the inevitable loss of their neighbourhood and homes, and keep a memory of this place alive.
